In human society and its environment (HSIE), the subjects of history and geography are mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10, where students study specific historical and geographical concepts and skills.
In HSIE, students explore varied subjects in human society and its environment to learn about history, geography, people, societies and culture.
Students also have an opportunity to learn more about people and the societies and environments in which they live through elective subjects.
A large number of individual subjects make up the key learning area of HSIE in which students:
- research, gather and analyse information
- question and make judgements
- write for a variety of purposes.
HISTORY
History is an engaging subject taught from Kindergarten to Year 6. Through exploring the actions, lifestyles, and motivations of individuals and communities—locally, nationally, and globally—students learn that history is made up of many stories and perspectives. They discover that historical events can be interpreted in different ways depending on the sources and viewpoints of historians. This learning helps students build a deeper understanding of civics and citizenship, while also fostering empathy and respect for diverse cultural experiences, including those of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, migrants, and women.
By studying important concepts such as cause and effect, change and continuity, and the significance of events, our students develop critical thinking skills and a thoughtful appreciation of the past and its impact on the present.
GEOGRAPHY
The NSW Geography Syllabus helps students explore the world around them by learning about places, people, and environments. It teaches students how places are connected, how people impact the environment, and how the environment affects our lives.
From Kindergarten to Year 6, students develop skills in asking questions, collecting information, using maps, and working in the field. It encourages understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, sustainability, and global connections.
Geography helps students become informed, responsible citizens who can think critically about the world and how we live in it.
