English

English study is mandatory in NSW from Kindergarten to Year 12.

Students learn about the English language through written, spoken and visual texts of increasing complexity as they progress through their schooling.

An understanding of the English language is central to how we communicate and essential for intellectual, social and emotional development.

The study of English should develop a love of literature and learning and be challenging and enjoyable. It develops skills to enable students to experiment with ideas and expression, to become active, independent and lifelong learners, to work with each other and to reflect on their learning.

At Yowie Bay Public School, we recognise that language and text are essential in shaping our understanding of ourselves and the world. Through the English curriculum from K–10, our students explore various forms of language that increase in complexity, enabling them to grasp how meaning is created, shared, and interpreted.

Our students engage with a rich array of literature, including the distinct voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, as well as stories from across the globe. These texts reflect diverse lived experiences, cultures, and knowledge, which enhances their understanding and empowers them to express their own identities and values.

In the early years, students at Yowie Bay develop foundational literacy skills, which they build upon as they advance in their education. This strong base allows them to navigate language in more sophisticated contexts.

Through a blend of understanding and creating texts, students learn about the significance and artistry of English. These interconnected skills support them in becoming confident communicators, critical and imaginative thinkers, and active contributors to society.
